Abecedarian Quilt-A-Long with Thomas Knauer

This is my secret message quilt.

A few months ago, Thomas Knauer asked me to be part of his Abecedarian Quilt-A-Long. I've been working hard this year at Sewing Selfishly, and saying no to projects, so I thought this would be a great time to make myself a quilt before the fall semester started. I planned out a brilliant, very meta quilt using a quote from this letter Mark Twain sent to Helen Keller. I was going to make it with second hand clothing and Thomas' Thesaurus fabric. It was going to be artsy and sensational. And then something stopped me in my tracks.

I am part of a group of friends that have known each other since we were pregnant with our now almost four year olds. We're a motley crew, spanning all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs. Despite our differences and heated discussions, we've remained friends. Thanks to the internet, we have what feels like a four year long, never ending coffee date. Angela is part of our group. She's just entered her thirties, is married, and has three young kids. Angela is a book nerd, likes to cook, and is a real smart ass . I like her a lot.

In July, Angela found out she has cancer.

Cancer isn't supposed to happen to my people. It's supposed to happen to other people. And people already dying. And really really old people. And bad people. I know this all isn't how life works, but it all struck me too close to home.

I'm an emotional person. I got mad. Angela lives three thousand miles away. I can't hug her. I can't hold her hand. I can't help her run errands, make her dinner or clean her house. So I scrapped my meta quilt and I made this one just for her.

I had each of our friends email me a message to send to Angela. I used the new Stained by Sharpie fabric markers to transcribe those messages on to the back blocks. That way we can send her our love and support while she is undergoing chemo to kill her Hodgkin's Lymphoma. It pales in comparison to what we would all like to do for Angela. But it's all we got.

Each Braille dot started as a square backed with Pellon Wonder Under. If you haven't tried this yet, you're missing out. I keep it in stock at all times. Next, each of those squares I hand cut with an Olfa Circle cutter. It's a tiny rotary cutter built into a compass and it's freaking brilliant. Perfect circles with the most minimal waste. The Voices were so happy. Forty nine appliqued Braille dots.

I used the extra blank 'letters' I had to make Angela a zippy bag and filled it with organic lollypops from Trader Joes so she can have sweets at the ready if her mouth gets dry and gross tasting. Then I packed it all up and sent it three thousand miles away. Unselfish Sewing makes me feel better.

Oh, you want to know what the secret message in the quilt is?

It says Fuck you Lymphoma!   And I mean it from the very bottom of my heart.

Kick cancer's ass, Angela. We love you.

P.S. All posts for the rest of this month are going to be some seriously selfish sewing, I promise. Bring on Selfish Sewing Week!

This Year's Resolutions and Happy Mail

So it's April and I'm just writing down my resolutions. I made them four months ago and have been working on them since. I have just decided to articulate them into words finally and share. Really.

2012 Resolutions:
1. Buy less fabric "just because" I like it (unless I really really love it.)

2. Use up fabric I already have. (My fabric hording is no where as bad as others I have seen, but if I use up what I have then I need more, right?)

3. Sew selfishly. (I'm not doing as well with this with custom orders and gifts, but I do have a swoon quilt pattern that will be for me.)

4. Learn new sewing skills.(You know, like threading and using my serger.)

Last week I finished up two sewing projects, but I can't show you because they are Mother's Day presents. What?!? Mother's Day presents done before it is even May? I know. I don't know who I am either.

Happy Mail!: I got my Pretty {little} Pouch swap in the mail this weekend! I was so psyched. This is what my partner, Sandi, sent:
I love it! Sandi even tried some hand quilting/embroidery on the bag which she confessed she had never tried before. How awesome is that?
I love this piece of Melody Miller's Ruby Rising Star, too. I've been pondering what to make with it, but I'm thinking I may just put it into an embroidery hoop to hang on my studio wall since I love it so much.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have found a use for the flask full of corks that sit on my kitchen counter top. Cork stamps. I can't find the original source of this idea. I read too many blogs and pins, but if you google 'wine cork stamp' you'll find a bunch. It took me a few stamps to remember to reverse my doodles. Anyone need a backwards sewing machine stamp?
It is a great mini project to do and you could make some nice cards or wrapping paper. Hey, I didn't even cut myself with my X-acto knife despite it's brand new blade! Now I just need a project for all of our beer bottle caps... One that won't make our house look like a man cave.

I'm hoping to finish up my mother/daughter vintage sheet aprons before this weekend. Hopefully, J&J will cooperate!

Happy Hump Day!

Good intentions

I keep writing blog posts in my head but my assistant never seems to type them out, edit my pictures and post them. Ha! Wouldn't you just love a personal assistant?

I have been quite productive lately. Two custom flannel blankets for a friend's twins, a custom necktie, and a handful of nightlight orders too. The necktie is a copy of the one I made my FIL for Christmas. I love this fabric, especially the sugar skull Guadalupe....so I made myself a nightlight with a scrap of her. Can you imagine; I'd made hundreds of nightlights and this it the first one just for me? It is also a one of a kind as I am officially out of this fabric.

I also packed up my Modern Mini quilt along with other handmade goodies for Abby's Perfect Broken Heart auction. It made me a little sad to send it away after working so hard on it, but I hope it makes a good amount of money for Abby. I held my own little girl a bit tighter tonight and can't imagine what it feels like to be Abby's mom.

Two new clutches are in the works too! I can't wait to show them off once they are done. Also, this week two squares arrived from my Modern 99 quilting bee.

Earlier this week I was worried because my middle and index finger were dry and peeling. Totally weird. Truth be told I was thinking I had some weird fungus or something. As I was working on stitching some details on the new clutches today I figured out what it was. Turns out I have been doing so much hand quilting and sewing that I have made calluses! I feel like a real quilter now. :) And will need to order a proper sized thumble asap.

I'm off to bed. Tomorrow I'm painting Jane's big girl bed!
