Handbags, Indie Designers, and $20,000

2014 has been a crazy year and it's winding up to go out with a bang. Among many other things going on in life, I'm working up wrapping up the final days of the last Pattern Parcel sale for the year. When we started this idea a year ago we had not idea how big it would grow. It's our seventh sale this year! Our goal is to raise over $20,000 for the charity, Donors Choose, which goes to classrooms in need. Yes, twenty thousand dollars. When I said it to Danny a few months ago he balked a bit, but here we are with 5 days to go and we're so damn close! I'll be on bated breath until the very end. ;)

Pattern Parcel #7: Choose your own price and support DonorsChoose. Win/win

Messengers, satchels, hobos, shoulder bags, vintage bags...Pattern Parcel #7 has something for everyone. Never sewn a bag before? Now is your change to try your hand at a new skill. Plus, handbags never make your butt look big and never need a FBA. Trying to keep the budget tight as we head into the holidays? Perfect! You can make a new bag for all the ladies in your life. (Heck, even some for the men.)

Parcel #7 includes:

Barcelona Bag and Wallet by Pat Bravo
Butterfly Sling Purse by Emmaline Patterns

Choose a price of $32 or greater for Parcel #7 and you will automatically also be sent the Bonus Pattern! That's just over $5 a pattern. The Bonus Pattern for this Parcel is the brand new Daphne Bag pattern from Clover & Violet. The Daphne is a slouchy satchel that can be worn cross body or as a shoulder bag. The zip top keeps your gear secure and the internal pockets keep your accessories where you need them. This is a brand new, never been seen before pattern and is an exclusive opportunity for Parcel #7 customers!

Pre-School to Pre-Teens: Parcel #5 is here!

Our little girls. Our daughters. Our nieces. Our granddaughters. For most of us, they are the very reason we started sewing. They melt our hearts and make us tear our hair out all in the same five minutes. Girls. (shrugs) We're magical creatures.

Today I'm launching a special Pattern Parcel collection for our girls. The indie patterns in their Parcel were chosen for their versatility. They're modern styles that transcend time. They're Audrey. They're Marilyn. They're Hillary. This Parcel completely covers the size range from 4 years up to a 12 tween. Most of the patterns span even further, as small as newborn and 3 months, up to a 14, 16, 18 girl's tween sizing. We also chose these patterns because they were all styles we'd be proud to have our girls wear. But they're also still styles our girls want to wear. And I'm sure you all know what a fine line that is to walk.

We sew for our girls because we want them to have quality garments made with fine materials. Because store bought clothing for women these days is overpriced and poorly made. It's trash waiting to fall apart and accumulate in our landfills. Not only that, but let's be honest, today's store bought clothes are often styles that rush our little girls into an over sexualized womanhood or cram commercial garbage down their throats.

Let's make our girls clothes that are comfortable. That allow them to be the people they want to be and allow them the movement they need for all their activities. These patterns let our girls climb trees and build forts or get lost in books. They let our girls run and play. They can be athletes, artists, engineers and scientists. And even princesses. ;) Let's make our girls a wardrobe worth wearing.

Bombshell Swimsuit by Closet Case Files

I distinctly recall the conversation I had with my mother when I realized the awesomeness of sewing. It was after finally finishing my first handmade garment from a pattern; a black knit elastic waistband skirt. I was excited at the seemingly limitless possibilities of sewing your own clothes.

"You can sew whatever you want?!?" I asked my mother with anticipation.

"You can! Clothes, curtains, quilts. Everything except bathing suits." she tells me. She went on to elaborate that she'd tried to sew herself a bathing suit once and it just came out, well, wrong.

I carried on merrily for twenty plus years of sewing, happy with this limitation. That is, until last month, when the Pattern Parcel #3 Inspiration Tour started. I'll be honest. I was surprised at the number of bloggers who stitched up the Bombshell Swimsuit pattern. I mean, you can't sew bathing suits on a home sewing machine and have them come out right....or can you?

Poppy Tunic

Poppy Tunic sewing pattern || This is awesome on it's own for the summer and I'm going to layer it come fall.

I've been told I was born in the wrong decade. I absolutely adore vintage clothing and household items. When my Nana Jane passed away and all the objects of value had been taken or auctioned my siblings and I were allowed to go into her home and take what we'd like as a momento. As I wandered her bedroom I encountered drawers of dress scarves with bold patterns. Jewelry boxes filled with bakelite bangles in every color imaginable. Perfectly stacked boxes of beaded evening handbags.

"I'm going to need some trash bags" I told my father.

Poppy Tunic sewing pattern || I'm a little obsesses with vintage.

This is one of the magazines I found in her house that day, along with many others including Esquire's Party Book and a first edition Betty Crocker Cookbook which is my most treasured vintage cookbook (and I use it all the time). I love early American sports wear. I love that there was no fear of wearing bright colors and huge bold patterns. It makes my heart sing.

Poppy Tunic sewing pattern || This is awesome on it's own for the summer and I'm going to layer it come fall.

Naturally, when I saw this fabric at Joanns it had to come home with me. My Nana had a set of dishes with poppies on them in these very colors that I was very fond of as a child and it turns out had an even better story to go with them. Sadly, I neglected to take them after she passed. Never the less, this Alexander Henry Keely fabric was not neglected.

Poppy Tunic sewing pattern || This is awesome on it's own for the summer and I'm going to layer it come fall.

Seemed like an appropriate fabric for my Poppy Tunic. Despite most everyone else making their Poppy Tunics in a solid with a patterned panel, I went big. Pattern on pattern on pattern. The panel is (I believe) a Denise Schmidt piece I had and the striped bias tape a gift as part of a trade I did with Ms. Cassie. (I forget what I swapped you for, Cass. Do I owe you something? heh, heh...) As you can see, I'm quite in love with my Poppy Tunic. Dress, beach cover up, house dress, jeans tunic. This one will be worn to shreads for certain.

I decided to add an elastic gather under the bust to accentuate my hourglass shape. Also of note, I measured a size XL in this pattern, but cut out the XXL. I made the Waterfall Blouse pattern by Make It Perfect last week and used the XL but it turned out too snug in my upperbust/underarm. No worries. My mother has a fabulous Waterfall Blouse now in block printed Indian fabric. Luckily I had enough to make a second in an XXL for myself. Fast forward to my cutting out the Poppy Tunic and I went XXL again and I think next time I will make the XL. Long story short: the Poppy is roomier than the Waterfall. However, I do love the pattern. Both of them, really.

Poppy Tunic sewing pattern || This is awesome on it's own for the summer and I'm going to layer it come fall.

My ever faithful assistant begged me to take her picture too. It delights her to make faces and tell me when she's ready for me to take her picture. Which is what she thinks I'm doing when she takes my pictures. Okay, that does pretty much sum it up.

Poppy Tunic sewing pattern || Jane must pose for the camera, too.

The Poppy Tunic is part of Parcel #3 and while you can always buy it through Make It Perfect, buying the Parcel gets you four, if not five more patterns and lets you support children's education too. It's feel good pattern buying and I'm your enabler. Treat yo'self!

Jorna Tank

The Jorna Tank from Jenna Brand by Made with Moxie: This is so cute! What an easy pattern alteration for a nice tank top.

I've only got four more weeks of my summer left. I start school up again July 8. Only this is the real deal. Fulltime. Yikes! There goes my daylight sewing hours. Needless to say, I've been trying to take as much advantage of what I have left. Imagine my surprise when I found that despite running the Pattern Parcel #3 sale mostly myself (Danny does all the IT work) I have had time to sew not one, but two of the patterns in the Parcel! This is a first, folks. Not only have I finished and photographed two of them, but I've got a Bombshell on my cutting table. Wait, no! I've sewn three. I totally forgot my own pattern. D'oh.
The Jorna Tank from Jenna Brand by Made with Moxie: This is so cute! What an easy pattern alteration for a nice tank top.

This is the Jorna Tank Dress. Pretty short dress, huh? The pattern comes with a tank option with a flared, almost peplum hem option. I honestly would have made the dress, but I did not have enough fabric. So I modified the pattern to be a hip length straight tank to use as fabric possible. Elastic cord stitched into a six inch casing I made by stitching down the seam allowances added a little ruching detail.
The Jorna Tank from Jenna Brand by Made with Moxie: This is so cute! What an easy pattern alteration for a nice tank top.

I'm in love with how my Jorna Tank feels on. And I normally and not very happy with knit garments I sew, so this is a major win. The facings in this pattern add great stability. This pattern goes together quickly and easily. Don't you just love patterns that go together without a struggle or cursing AND fit so well? Thank you, Jenna Brand!

I'm super excited about wearing my Jorna Tank too because I get to show off my gun show! Danny and I are in a little family competition to see who can lose 15% of their weight first. While I'm not out to change who I am, we can all stand to be more healthy. We've been working out every day. Yes. Every. Single. Day. We bike and elliptical and I've been lifting and rowing on the BowFlex. Hence, my new biceps and triceps. I'm already down nine pounds!

At this rate, I'm going to need more Jorna Tanks!

Big changes at Perfect Pattern Parcel

I live my life with little to no regret. Bad things that happen to you are learning experiences for the future. Every event that has occurred in your life up until this point has shaped the person you are. When the going gets tough, think to yourself, “Why am I doing this? What is important to me?”

A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor: How conflict can cause introspection or why I am turning all the profits from Perfect Pattern Parcel over to charity.
Wall art by Mr. Pickwicks

The events that happened this pat weekend that ultimately led to Rachael and Pattern Parcel parting ways left me reeling. I had lost my blogging best friend, and all of a sudden overnight my blog and business were nothing by stress, chaos and confusion. I was left to ponder:

“Why am I doing this? Why did I start my blog and Pattern Parcel? Why should I keep going?”

It all just brought me back to the core of it all. I love to share what I make and teach people how to make it too. I love the online making community. I am passionate about independent, small designer businesses. I think it is incredibly important to give back and be charitable.

This is what is important to me and my family. This is what Danny and I believe in. We believe in being good people. We believe in helping others. We want to teach our children to hold these beliefs close to their hearts.

We also thinking running a business is fun and it’s even more fun to do together. Building something from nothing, creating a product that customers want, making the first sale...it’s exciting. Pattern Parcel is a learning tool. We read books and attend webinars. We test new ideas and analyze the results. It’s like our third baby, except I didn’t have a c-section to give birth to it and it’s not giving me stretch marks. ;)

A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor: How conflict can cause introspection or why I am turning all the profits from Perfect Pattern Parcel over to charity.
Wall art by Kaelah of The Clueless Girl

A few days rumination have brought Danny and I to this decision:

Going forward, all profits from Perfect Pattern Parcel will be also donated to charity.

We’re going back to the basics of it all. Supporting indie designers, being charitable, and developing community. Don’t worry. Nothing about Perfect Pattern Parcel is changing for you. We’re going to continue to build awesome collections of patterns from kickass designers. We’ll be continuing to feature talented bloggers who showcase the versatility of the patterns. And as always, we're going to continue to let you choose your price for the patterns and Pattern Parcel is still going to cover all the costs associated with running the sales. Then we're going to donate the rest. We may even be throwing in a sew-a-long contest or two. ;)

Thank you for reading to the end with me here. I am sincerely thankful for your support. It’s why I fell in love with blogging and this community.

Want to help and be part of Perfect Pattern Parcel ? Please shoot us an email at info@patternparcel.com. We'd love to have you.

I've got the itch! Kid's Clothes Week, Parcel #2, and Selfish Sewing Week

Pull out your calendars, friends. Next week is Kid's Clothes Week, and more importantly, this Friday is the much anticipated launch of Pattern Parcel #2. That's right, this Friday at 9am EST. Don't sweat the time zone. We put a countdown timer on the site for you. ;)

Now as much as I should be prepping for KCW next week, I can't hep but want to abandon it all because I know is coming up! That's right! Rachael of imagine gnats and I have another week of amazing indie patterns to feature and for you to WIN!WE have some juicy patterns lined up that you will love to sew up. So grab a pen and draw a line through April 28th through May 3rd. Because that week is for you.
Selfish Sewing Week is April 28 - May 3. Sew along with Made with Moxie and imagine gnats and win loads of free sewing, knitting and quilting patterns!
As makers we often put others first. We sew for gifts. We make clothes for our families. We knit for charity. We create to fill our stores. When was the last time you allowed yourself some Me Time? Women have spent the past, well, forever, being raised to think that we should always put others first and that do do anything else makes you an awful person. It's the reason we make less money, don't climb the career ladders as high, and a wealth of other issues. We guilt ourselves and each other if we ever allow ourselves to be first. And it's just stupid. I've never seen another man point a finger in another man's face and accuse him of being selfish.

So twice a year, for one week, for at least one hour a day, I am giving you permission to do some selfish sewing (or knitting, quilting, crocheting, etc). Use your skills and talents to make yourself sometime nice!

This year we'll be hosting Selfish Sewing Week over at Kollabora. If you have not joined Kollabora yet you are missing out. I know what you're thinking. Just one more social media thing to update and tend to. Not so! I implore you to go check out their site. You can share your projects, make a brand page if you have one, even sell your patterns through them. Kollabora was designed by makers for makers. It's like FlickR, but none of the things that make you hate it. Just way, way better. I'm in love. You can even make collections of your favorite patterns or projects for future inspiration.

Selfish Sewing Week is sponsored by Girl Charlee, Hawthorne Threads, and Auriful. If you are not familiar with these companies, do check them out. I love their fabrics and threads. Plus, great customer service. I've got a Girl Charlee order on the way that I can not wait to dig into!

So, yes lots of sewing coming up! Pattern Parcel #2 is this Friday. KCW next week and Selfish Sewing Week April 28-May 3. See you on Friday, when we reveal the patterns included in Parcel #2. Woo Hoo!

Selfish Sewing Week is April 28 - May 3. Sew along with Made with Moxie and imagine gnats and win loads of free sewing, knitting and quilting patterns!

How to Download Zip Pattern Files to your iPad

If you have one, tablets and iPads are a fabulous way to read pattern instructions while you are sewing a new pattern. Ros at Sew Delicious has a great tutorial to help you save your pattern files to your iPad. It's an awesome way to download your new Perfect Pattern Parcel files. It saves money not printing extra pages and allows you access to large, well lit instructions with pictures.

The trouble is iPads can't download or open zip files. Many indie designers use zip files for their patterns because they include extras, like pattern pieces formatted to be printed at commercial copy centers on large paper. Combined together these files can become quite large and designers zip them up so they can be digitally transported as smaller files.

So how the hell do I get them to my iPad?

DonorsChoose.org and Perfect Pattern Parcel

We chose DonorsChoose.org as our charity to support with Perfect Pattern Parcel for some very specific reasons. We wanted a charity that would have a direct and immediate impact. We wanted to not only help in the present, but also one that would develop a better future. DonorsChoose.org is an online charity that allows teachers across America to post classroom projects on their site in the effort to get them funded. Donors on the website can choose which projects they would like to contribute to and you can donate as little or as much as you would like. It's crowd sourcing for teachers. I strongly encourage you to check it out.

Danny, Rachael and I are so thrilled to tell you that through your generosity, Parcel #1 has already generated over $1,200 for DonorsChoose.org. That's HUGE! We can't thank you enough. Pat yourselves on the back!

Perfect Pattern Parcel lets you allocate your sale price to support DonorsChoose.org

Today I've invited an old school friend of Danny's, Natasha, to share with us her experiences as a teacher using DonorsChoose.org. Natasha has been teaching for 10 years. She teaches early childhood special education (3 to 5 years old) in Southern California.

Why did you first use Donor's Choose?
I heard about Donorschoose.org from a fellow teacher. Our schools are in really bad shape financially. We only get about $150 to pay for EVERYTHING the whole year. My students are too young to have text books, so all learning must be done with toys, manipulatives, and creative play furniture. Everything I had was used or damaged, and I didn't have many of the supplies and basic necessities needed to work with young students. My colleague had success with Donorschoose.org, so I decided to try it too.

Perfect Pattern Parcel lets you allocate your sale price to support DonorsChoose.org

What was the first classroom project you funded with Donor's Choose?
The first project I had funded was a sand table, a sensory table, and sensory toys from Lakeshore Learning. We didn't have any sensory materials at the time and children with Autism REALLY need to practice with all sorts of tactile media.

What was the out come of that project with Donor's Choose? Were you fully funded?
I was fully funded thanks to generous donors and organizations. Due to getting that project funded, I was able to submit requests for additional projects.

Perfect Pattern Parcel lets you allocate your sale price to support DonorsChoose.org

How did your classroom benefit from the Donor's Choose project?
I was able to create a sensory area that could change and evolve with the different classroom themes(Ex:use beans and seeds in the tables during our gardening unit, wet sand to make tracks with tires and cars during our transportation unit, make goop/snow/foam centers to practice touching wet/sticky textures). All these different activities helped desensitize the students I have with severe sensory issues and provided a fun place to go for everyone else.

Perfect Pattern Parcel lets you allocate your sale price to support DonorsChoose.org

Have you funded other projects with Donor's Choose? Do you have a current project waiting to be funded?
My classroom has and continues to benefit from not only the first project I had funded, but from all the projects I've been able to fund over the past 6 years. We now have a sensory center, science materials, books, a listening center, art supplies, math and language activities, and so much more thanks to this wonderful organization.I almost always have a project up on the website. I currently have a project to get phonics materials that involve all of the senses to aid in learning. I cannot be more clear that I would have NONE of these items without this organization. I simply do not know what I would have done if I didn't have opportunities to ask for assistance from wonderfully generous people looking to help those in need. It has changed the lives of so many students, and has made me an inspired, energetic, and motivated teacher.

I can't thank you enough, Natasha, for sharing your experiences with us!
